Launched in 2024 as Europe's first dedicated gathering for molecular life sciences educators and trainers, this biennial event has established itself as the go-to platform for those committed to transforming how we teach and train the next generation of scientists.

FEBS Education and Training Committee

The FEBS Education and Training Committee has the mission of promoting biochemistry and molecular biology education and training at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Thus, increasing the knowledge and skills of educators, encouraging the development of innovative teaching methods and educational resources, and sharing good education policies and practices are the main aims of the committee.

To realize these objectives, the FEBS Education and Training Committee organizes and funds educational events to advance teaching, training and learning in the molecular life sciences. These include FEBS Education and Training Committee Seasonal Webinars, FEBS Education Workshops organized with constituent FEBS societies, FEBS-sponsored Ambassador Education Events, education activities at the FEBS Congresses as well as events run jointly with FEBS bodies such as the Advanced Courses Committee, the Careers of Young Scientists Committee, and the Integration Committee. FEBS Education and Training Committee also oversees the Education Section of the FEBS OpenBio. One section of the FEBS Network is dedicated to blog-style posts on teaching approaches and resources for lecturers and tutors in the molecular life sciences, as well as announcements on education activities. 

Launched in 2016, FEBS Education Ambassadors is a unique structure in which FEBS Constituent Societies have one appointed member as a representative. The main aim of this initiative is to improve and promote molecular life sciences education through the networking and collaborations of Education Ambassadors and their FEBS Constituent Societies. The first FEBS Education Ambassadors Meeting was organized in 2016, at Prague. Following were the Ambassadors meetings in 2017 (Paris), 2018 (Zagreb), 2019 (Tbilisi), 2021 (Virtual), 2022 (Izmir) and 2023 (Vilnius). In addition to providing a supportive community of educators and a forum for sharing approaches and experiences from different countries, the initiative has at times focused on specific topics via small group work, for example in defining key knowledge and skills expected for molecular life sciences graduate.

FEBS

Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) is a charity that has 39 ‘Constituent Societies’ from across Europe and neighbouring regions. The objectives of FEBS are to contribute to and promote the advancement of research and education for the public benefit in the sciences of biochemistry, molecular biology and related disciplines…by all suitable means and in particular by:

• holding and arranging congresses, training and educational courses on matters connected with biochemistry and molecular biology and related disciplines;
• facilitating and supporting the exchange of scientific information between biochemists, molecular biologists and scientists working in related disciplines generally and especially in Europe and other countries of Constituent Societies;
• facilitating and supporting the training of young scientists in research, in the form of fellowships; and
• organising the editing and publication of scientific research and educational material in biochemistry and molecular biology and related disciplines.

FEBS Press has 4 prestigious journals, FEBS Journal, Molecular Oncology, FEBS Letters, FEBS OpenBio, which provide rigorous quality to scientific publication in molecular life sciences.

As a major European ‘umbrella’ organization, FEBS is nurturing various collaborations with other organizations in Europe and worldwide in order to advance research and teaching of molecular life sciences.

Naturally, FEBS collaborates with its Constituent Societies in support for molecular life science meetings across Europe and neighbouring regions (e.g. FEBS Congress, FEBS education workshops, FEBS National Lectures, FEBS3+ Meetings) as well as through providing extensive support for members of the Constituent Societies, particularly early-career scientists.  With the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) FEBS funds certain joint Advanced Courses and the FEBS | EMBO Women in Science Award. FEBS is a member of the BioMed Alliance, whose goals include advancing biomedical research in Europe.

Molecular life science research is a global activity. Journals from FEBS publish papers from researchers working across the world, often with collaboration between scientists in different countries and continents. The FEBS Congress and Advanced Courses programme attract participants from well beyond the European FEBS region. With these global considerations in mind, FEBS has long held close ties with the International Union for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB), of which FEBS is the European regional member, and is also developing links with learned societies in the molecular life sciences in regions with emerging interest, investment and output in this area of research.
