Teaching Large, Thinking Deep:
Active Learning and Assessment in Expanding Classrooms

Aim & Context
As biomedical faculties across Europe adapt to increasing student numbers, the need for scalable yet meaningful teaching and assessment strategies becomes ever more urgent.
This FEBS & NBS joint workshop brings together local and international educators to share experiences, explore practical tools, and reflect on evidence-based practices in higher education — especially in medical and life sciences.
Hosted by the Department of Biomedicine at the University of Bergen, the event is co-organized by the FEBS Education and Training Committee and the Norwegian Biochemical Society.


Program Highlights
- Hands-on workshops on active learning, MCQ writing, feedback, green labs and transferable skills
- FEBS Education and Training Academy Workshop on Active Learning (Academy Certification given after completion of 9 hours)
Talks on AI in assessment and engagement, inclusive learning, large-class challenges, small group teaching
- International speakers and FEBS Academy educators
- Interactive reflection and moderated roundtables
- Networking gathering at Eitri Innovation Center

Registration Fee:
- FEBS & NBS Joint Education Workshop (18-19 Sept. 2025) participation: € 50 (Includes attendance to all talks, and preferred parallel Hands-on tracks, coffee breaks, and informal networking session with food ('Meet & Mingle at Eitri: A Taste of Innovation and Connections (… and fresh sushi & sticks with soft drinks & coffee) on Sept. 18.
- FEBS Education and Training Academy Workshop (Bridging Science and Teaching: Active Learning strategies for Molecular Life Scientists; Trainer: Manuel João Costa - Universidade do Minho, Portugal)(18-19-20 Sept. 2025 / 3 hours each day-9 hours in total) participation and certification: € 125
- FEBS Education and Training Academy - Active Learning Workshop is partly sponsored (supported) by the Dept. of Biomedicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Bergen. When filling the registration form, department staff are kindly requested to use the discount code shared with them.

FEBS Education and Training Academy
The Academy, established by FEBS in 2024, is pan-European initiative supporting excellence in teaching and learning in the molecular life sciences.The FEBS Education and Training Academy champions excellence and innovation in molecular life sciences by strengthening the educational and mentoring skills of current and future academic staff. It offers interactive, certified workshops designed to upskill educators and empower effective teaching and supervision practices.
